1. Airbus and Air France Acquitted Over 2009 Rio-Paris Crash

Airbus and Air France were acquitted of manslaughter charges Monday by a French criminal court over their role in the 2009 crash of a flight from Brazil to Paris that plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 228 people on board. The verdict was a bitter disappointment for the families of the victims. The ruling acknowledged that the companies had shown “imprudence” and “negligence” in their handling of faulty sensors that were at the heart of the case. But, it continued, there was no evidence that the crash would have been avoided if those failings had not occurred — something that would be required to secure a manslaughter conviction.

[Expression]
▶be acquitted of ~ : ~에 대해 무죄판결을 받다.

2. Chinese Worker in Pakistan Is Arrested on Blasphemy Charges

A Chinese worker on a dam project in northern Pakistan has been arrested and imprisoned on accusations of blasphemy. The police report said the man was on a field visit along with a team of Pakistani workers when he was accused of making remarks and gestures against God and the Prophet Muhammed after afternoon prayers. Officials said the Chinese man was being transported to a jail near the city of Abbottabad for his safety, and faced court hearings to determine whether he would be indicted. Under Pakistani law, a conviction on those accusations could bring the death penalty.

[Expression]
▶blasphemy : 신성 모독
▶be accused of : ~으로 기소되다. ~으로 혐의로 체포되다. ~로 비난받다.
▶indict : 기소하다

3. Hollywood Writers Approve of Strike as Shutdown Looms

Hollywood is getting ever closer to a shutdown. Unions representing thousands of television and movie writers said Monday that they had overwhelming support for a strike, giving union leaders the right to call for a walkout when the writers’ contract with major Hollywood studios expires May 1. The unions, which are affiliated East and West coast branches of the Writers Guild of America, said more than 9,000 writers had approved a strike authorization, with 98% of the vote. WGA leaders have said this is an “existential” moment for writers, contending that compensation has stagnated over the past decade despite the explosion of television series in the streaming era.

[Expression]
▶be getting ever closer to ~: ~에 더 가까워지고 있다. (ever를 사용하면서 가까워지고 있음을 강조)
▶walkout : 파업 (=strike)

History helps us to learn from the past and to prepare for the future.

"Where are their parents?"

아이들 키우기가 점점 무서운 세상이 되어가고 있습니다.
